1975年11月，巴黎，猶太極左翼活動家皮埃爾·戈德曼的上訴聽證會即將開始。他因四起武裝搶劫被判終身監禁，其中一起導致兩名婦女死亡，但他否認了謀殺指控，拒不認罪。隨著這場庭審被媒體大肆報道，戈德曼被塑造成了一位左派知識分子的浪漫英雄。而與此同時，戈德曼與他年輕的律師喬治·基曼的關係卻日益緊張。戈德曼難以捉摸、雄言善辯，即使冒著被判死刑的風險也始終在宣揚自己的理念，讓這場庭審變得愈發混亂。
《戈德曼審判》描繪了一個激進分子的精神心理肖像，同時也描繪了一個因種族主義和社會不公而四分五裂的社會。令人感到悲哀的是，這些問題仍舊荼毒著今日社會。
